TURP

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary problems caused by an enlarged prostate, a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). During the procedure, a surgeon inserts a resectoscope (a thin tube with a light and camera) through the urethra to reach the prostate. The surgeon then removes small pieces of prostate tissue that are blocking the flow of urine. TURP is considered the gold standard for treating BPH and usually results in significant relief of symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and weak urine stream. Recovery typically involves a short hospital stay and a period of rest at home
